Mission

Open Arts as a creative organization touches the expression of passion in the creative arts as part of its mission of making a positive difference in the lives of people in the community through work of arts. We prioritize works of art and stories from people (women, young people in villages and communities) whose voices have been excluded from the universal conversation, using arts and culture as narratives to influence and shape the reality of life in northern Nigeria.

History

For a few years now, there has been national and global coverage for art from northern Nigeria. While this is great for our writers and artists, the Erasure of a while generation makes the victory sour. Before our current crop of diligent creatives, one of the first published books from northern Nigeria was by Alhaji Imam, published in 1933. The first woman to publish a novel in northern Nigeria; Hajiya Hafsat Abdulwaheed did so in 1980. The cultural and creative industry in northern Nigeria has been alive for years and yet, we are allowing it to die off now at a time when it is most desired. Open Art’s was founded on 2019 on the backbone of showcasing what northern Nigerian culture, art and literature really mean, of celebrating our radiant heritage, of bringing to the world the works of our creatives written about and for northern Nigeria in English and our indigenous languages. Every project from open Art’s is inspired by the drive to see the Nigerian creative industry flourish.
